Imagine2050 Staff • May 12, 2017

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, events in Texas, Ohio, and Arizona.

On Monday, May 15, former federal employee turned anti-Muslim activist Philip Haney will speak in San Antonio, Texas. Haney will give a presentation to G416 Patriots, a group created by former leaders of San Antonio’s now-defunct ACT for America chapter. Roy White, the former San Antonio chapter leader, organized an anti-Muslim event in March with a group calling itself Patriots for San Antonio. According to an email announcing the creation of G416 Patriots, White’s new group will be even more explicitly anti-Muslim than ACT.

“Whether it is with failed immigration policies such as the Refugee Resettlement issue, encroachment in our classrooms,” the email reads, “Sharia creep in the workplace or infiltration of Islamic apologists that influence our local law enforcement officials, G416 Patriots will be telling the truth about Islam.”

On Tuesday, May 16, anti-immigrant group Texans for Immigration Reduction and Enforcement (TFIRE) will hold its monthly meeting in Houston, Texas. The meeting will feature a presentation by TFIRE President Larry Korkmas, who will discuss developments regarding Texas’ latest legislative session. In February, TFIRE’s meeting featured a presentation by Roy White, who still represented ACT for America at the time. ACT publically distanced itself from White shortly afterwards.

On Wednesday, May 17, Clare Lopez of the conspiracy-peddling anti-Muslim think tank Center for Security Policy will speak in Valley City, Ohio. Lopez will speak at a meeting of the Medina County Friends and Neighbors. The group has invited Lopez to speak multiple times, most recently in October. The event is also being promoted by the Ohio chapters of ACT for America.

Finally, on Wednesday, May 17, Grassroots Tea Party Activists will host Susan Tully of flagship anti-immigrant organization Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) in Phoenix, Arizona. As FAIR’s National Field Director, Tully gives presentations to conservative and far-right groups across the country. She has previously claimed President Obama was “more interested in supporting those who are trying to hurt and undermine the United States” and suggested he intends to do “everything to hurt us.”
