There Goes the Neighborhood: April 1, 2016

Imagine2050 Staff • Apr 01, 2016

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, a leading anti-refugee activist heads to North Carolina and southern California prepares for another protest against so-called sanctuary cities.

On Tuesday, April 5, anti-refugee activist James Simpson will speak in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Simpson will give a presentation titled, “The Refugee Resettlement Migration Crisis” as part of the ICON Speaker Series. Previous ICON presenters include Roy Beck, of anti-immigrant group NumbersUSA, and anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist John Guandolo.

Simpson’s work rose in prominence among anti-refugee activists last year after the anti-Muslim think tank Center for Security Policy published his conspiratorial book, The Red-Green Axis: Refugees, Immigration and the Agenda to Erase America. Simpson was also a featured speaker at last October’s annual “Writers Workshop,” organized by The Social Contract Press, a white nationalist publishing house.

On Thursday, April 7, members of the anti-immigrant group We the People Rising will hold an “end sanctuary cities” rally in Santa Ana, California. Activists with the anti-immigrant group will gather in front of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and display portions of The Remembrance Project’s “Stolen Lives Quilt.” The group and other nativist activists in Southern California have held similar demonstrations in both February and March.

Additional information on this event and others can be found in the map below. The events scheduled for next week are marked with red stars.
