Trump’s Secretary of the Interior nominee has supported anti-immigrant legislation and associated with white nationalists

Rep. Ryan Zinke is a U.S. congressman representing Montana’s at-large congressional district. Zinke has worked with various outfits and individuals known for their white nationalist and anti-Muslim views.

    • In March 2016, Zinke accepted an interview with the anti-immigrant group ProEnglish regarding his co-sponsorship of H.R. 997, a measure to designate English as the official language of the United States. During the interview, Zinke said he was “thankful” for the 2016 “election cycle” because “at least the age of political correctness is over.”
    • During his campaign run in 2014, it was reported that Zinke had accepted a $500 campaign donation from Earl Holt, the leader of the white nationalist Council of Conservative Citizens. The work of the Council of Conservative Citizens was cited by now-convicted Charleston, South Carolina church shooter Dylann Roof in his manifesto. A spokesperson for Zinke reportedly said he would donate Holt’s contribution to a fund set up to support the victims of the deadly shooting.
    • In October 2016, Zinke endorsed Taylor Rose, a Republican who ran for a seat in the Montana House with ties to the white nationalist group Youth for Western Civilization.
    • A local Montana chapter leader of ACT for America attended Zinke’s 2016 election night watch party. According to Montana Public Radio, Calvin Beringer, who co-heads the Flathead County ACT chapter, was one of about 100 guests at the viewing party.
