Repost: Roanoke Mayor invokes Japanese internment as justification for barring Syrian refugees

The Roanoke Times published a press release from the Roanoke Mayor’s office declaring that the city will not accept any Syrian refugees.

The mayor, David Bowers, invokes the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII as justification for his decision.

“I’m reminded that President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt compelled to sequester Japanese foreign nationals after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and it appears that the threat of harm to America from Isis [sic] now is just as real and serious as the threat from our enemies then.” -Roanoke Mayor David Bowers
