Immigrant Justice Arrives at the Democratic National Convention

Jill Garvey • Sep 05, 2012

Social media sites were all atwitter last night over the DNC speeches by San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and First Lady Michelle Obama. But the fireworks outside the convention were equally dramatic. The UndocuBus arrived in Charlotte ahead of the DNC and the “No Papers, No Fear” riders along with immigrant justice advocates and artists have put their presence to good use. Ten undocumented individuals were arrested during a peaceful action outside the DNC venue. See below for photos of some of yesterday’s activities.

Tonight, activists for immigrant justice will celebrate the artists who have infused the movement with creative energy at the UndocuNation artist showcase. Join CultureStrike and Center for New Community along with performers Los Rakas, emcee Jasiri X, spoken word artists Sacrificial Poets (Raleigh), singer-songwriter Laila Nur (Greensboro) and more. An art gallery will feature the work of Julio Salgado, Marco Saavedra, Felipe Baeza, Inocente and many other artists from around the country. Artist Favianna Rodriguez and poet Yosimar Reyes will host the event. Special guest speakers include founder of Define American, Jose Antonio Vargas.
