There Goes the Neighborhood: January 13, 2017

Imagine2050 Staff • Jan 13, 2017

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, nativists groups in Montana, California, Oregon, and Texas hold their first events of the year.

On Saturday, January 14, local chapters of anti-Muslim grassroots group ACT for America will hold events in Kalispell, Montana and Corona, California. In Montana, the Flathead County ACT chapter will host a screening of the short documentary Islam Rising: Geert Wilders’ Warning to the West. As the film’s title suggests, Geert Wilders, the Netherlands’s leading far-right politician and anti-Muslim bigot, features prominently.

In California, the local ACT chapter’s Saturday meeting will feature a presentation by Roy White about supposed pro-Islam bias contained in some school textbooks. In addition to leading San Antonio’s ACT chapter, White founded the group Truth in Texas Textbooks in 2013 to pressure school administrators into using textbooks anti-Muslim activists prefer (i.e. ones that erase non-Judeo-Christian religions from history). Focusing on textbooks remains a major strategy of the organized anti-Muslim movement. White’s group has evidenced this by broadening its geographic scope, rebranding as Truth in Textbooks last year. Truth in Textbooks now functions as a program of ACT for America.

Also on Saturday, January 14, anti-immigrant group Oregonians for Immigration Reform (OFIR) will hold its first 2017 meeting in Salem, Oregon. According to an announcement on the group’s website, attendees will discuss OFIR’s legislative goals for 2017. OFIR President Cynthia Kendoll will also discuss her experience on a week-long tour of the U.S.-Canada border organized by anti-immigrant group Center for Immigration Studies.

Finally, on Tuesday, January 17, anti-immigrant group Texans for Immigration Reduction and Enforcement (TFIRE) will hold a meeting in Houston, Texas. TFIRE’s featured speaker will be MerryLynn Gerstenschlager, Texas Eagle Forum Vice President.

Additional information on these nativist events and others can be found in the map below. A red star indicates events scheduled for next week.
