There Goes the Neighborhood: December 2, 2016

Imagine2050 Staff • Dec 02, 2016

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, nativist speakers are set to appear in Florida, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.

On Sunday, December 4, anti-Muslim activist Tom Trento will speak in Coral Springs, Florida. Trento will give a presentation titled, “The Threat of Terrorism: A Workshop for your Safety and Security,” at an event sponsored by the Educational Alliance to Combat Hate. Trento is the founder of Florida-based anti-Muslim organization The United West. He is also an associate of anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist Frank Gaffney and was one of many co-authors of Shariah: The Threat to America—a conspiracy-laden anti-Muslim book published by Gaffney’s Center for Security Policy.

On Monday, December 5, anti-Muslim writer and speaker Bill French (also known by the pseudonym Bill Warner) will speak in Cleveland, Ohio. French’s presentation is sponsored by the local chapter of anti-Muslim grassroots group ACT for America. French is the founder of the Tennessee-based Center for the Study of Political Islam and has described traditional Muslim garments like the hijab as a “hate symbol.” This year, French has also given anti-Muslim presentations in North Carolina and Florida.

Also on Monday, December 5, The Institute of World Politics will host a panel discussion in Washington, D.C. featuring anti-Muslim commentators Andrew McCarthy and Sebastian Gorka. Participants will discuss the topic “Islamic Jihad and the Role of National Security Law.” Gorka, a contributor to Breitbart News, was a paid consultant for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. His wife, Katharine, was recently named to the Trump administration’s Homeland Security transition team. McCarthy was a less formal advisor to the Trump campaign, but was still influential to Trump ‘s proposed “extreme vetting” policy against Muslims.

Finally, on Tuesday, December 6, McCarthy will join anti-immigrant leader Mark Krikorian for a panel discussion hosted by right wing law firm Judicial Watch in Washington, D.C. McCarthy and Krikorian, along with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and former attorney general Edwin Meese, will discuss their plan for the Trump administration’s early days in a presentation called “The First 100 Days: The Anti-Corruption Agenda.” The presentation is laughably titled, given the close ties to Wall Street and deep-pocketed political donors of many of Trump’s announced cabinet picks.
