There Goes the Neighborhood: August 5, 2016

Imagine2050 Staff • Aug 05, 2016

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, anti-Muslim leaders have speaking engagements in Texas and Idaho, while a field representative from the country’s largest anti-immigrant group speaks in North Carolina.

On Monday, August 8 and Tuesday, August 9, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn (Ret.) will speak in Houston and San Antonio, Texas, respectively. Flynn, who served as an adviser to Donald Trump, also has connections to prominent anti-Muslim groups. The retired military figure sits on the board of ACT for America, the largest anti-Muslim grassroots group operating in the country. Both of his Texas appearances are sponsored by local ACT chapters. His appearances are part of a greater speaking circuit to promote his new book, which alleges that the Obama administration has failed to recognize the threat posed by “radical Islam.” Flynn spoke to ACT chapters in Ohio and Virginia last month. He was also featured on the main stage during the Republican National Convention.

Also on Tuesday, August 9, the Treasure Valley ACT for America chapter will hold a meeting in Meridian, Idaho. Anthony Harper, publisher of Intermountain Christian News, will be the featured speaker. A Facebook page for the event states Harper will discuss his efforts working to Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID) to block funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.

Finally, on Tuesday, August 9, Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) field representative Joyce Mucci will speak in Highlands, North Carolina. Mucci will speak at a luncheon organized by the Mountain High Republican Women’s Club. Before joining FAIR in 2007, Mucci founded a now-defunct anti-immigrant group in Missouri that FAIR listed as a state contact group on its website. This year, Mucci has represented FAIR and its anti-immigrant agenda at events in Texas, Missouri, and Georgia.

Additional information on these events and others can be found in the map below. The events scheduled for next week are marked with a red star.
