The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced today that it has agreed to run a newly modified Islamophobic advertisement on public transit vehicles in the greater Boston area. The ads are being paid for by anti-Muslim activists Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer via their organization, the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI).
The recently approved ad reads: “In any war between the civilized man and those engaged in savage acts, support the civilized man. Defeat violent jihad. Support Israel.” It is an updated version of a previous AFDI ad submitted in November that was rightfully rejected by the MBTA after they said it was demeaning toward Boston’s Muslim community. A U.S. district judge recently ruled in favor of the MBTA’s decision to refuse the ad, saying the original was too “ambiguous.”
However, Geller’s lawyers at the American Freedom Law Center (AFLC) announced the MBTA has agreed to run the revised version of the ad as a result of its more definitive language. AFLC’s Senior Counsel David Yerushalmi also revealed that AFDI is planning to submit another Islamophobic ad to test the MBTA’s “boundaries” and challenge what they deem acceptable to run on transit vehicles, proving once again how relentless Geller and Spencer are in spreading their message of hate and intolerance.
