Susan Smith
Susan Smith, founder of the Nebraska Advisory Group, who along with Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom are listed on the Federation for American Immigration Reform’s (FAIR) website as state-level affiliates to FAIR, announced on July 7 that she will be a write-in candidate for the District 11 seat held by incumbent State Sen. Brenda Council.
Nebraska’s elected officials have flirted with an Arizona-modeled law, and Kris Kobach of the Institute to Reform Legal Immigration (IRLI)-which along with FAIR claims membership in the John Tanton Network of anti-immigrant, nativist groups (here’s a map of the groups)-has long labored to draft and to see an anti-immigrant measure be upheld as constitutional in the city of Freemont, NE. All to no relative avail, though.
For her part, Smith and her group have openly opposed any measures that might be viewed as “helpful” to undocumented immigrants, including LB 599 which would allocate tax money for any woman seeking prenatal care in that state. As Paul Hammel wrote in his piece about LB 599 on Omaha.com:
“The Nebraskans Advisory Group, which has pushed for tougher laws against illegal immigrants, urged the GOP to make the bill a wedge issue by withholding any financial support to senators who support the measure.
‘Every single dollar that is spent on illegal aliens is a dollar that is not spent on citizens and legal immigrants,’ said an email from Susan Smith, the head of the advisory group.”
