Fox News personality with history of promoting anti-Muslim sentiment appointed spokesperson for U.S. State Department

During her time at Fox News, Heather Nauert published alarmist stories about Muslims and refugees in the United States. She also invited prominent misinformation experts from the organized anti-Muslim movement to peddle Islamophobic conspiracy theories on Fox News.

    • During a 2009 episode of Fox News’ “Strategy Room,” Heather Nauert moderated an hour-long panel discussion featuring notorious anti-Muslim figures Frank Gaffney, Robert Spencer, and Nonie Darwish. The segment’s topic of discussion was “stealth jihad,” an outlandish conspiracy theory that posits Muslims are actively infiltrating and subverting U.S. institutions-like the U.S. government-from within to replace them with an Islamic theocracy.
    • In a 2013 report filed by Nauert, she blamed creeping “Sharia law” after a YMCA in St. Paul, Minnesota allotted time for a female-only swim session. “The minority are becoming the majority at one community pool,” she said.
    • During an episode of “Fox & Friends” in 2017, Nauert said Sweden was reinstating the draft in order to keep the county’s refugee population under control. In actuality, the draft was reinstated over concerns about Russian aggression in certain areas of Europe.
    • In a 2016 news report, Nauert shamed refugee students in Pennsylvania for saying they were deserving of “an even better [public] education.” “Refugees from overseas going to our schools for free, but apparently that is not good enough for them,” she said in the segment. Nauert’s colleague at Fox, Brian Kilmeade, called the student activism “ungratefulness.”
