Council of Conservative Citizens Reaches Out To Student Group

Imagine 2050 Staff • Jun 13, 2011

Last month, we reported that John Wolfe, an activist for the far right student group Youth for Western Civilization (YWC), was due to speak at a meeting of the DC area chapter of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC), a white nationalist organization which has called African Americans a “retrograde species of humanity.” The Southern Poverty Law Center contacted YWC’s leader Kevin DeAnna and he categorically denied these allegations, stating, “I have no colleague named John Wolfe. I don’t know who that is and there is no YWC member speaking at [the CCC] event.”

DeAnna may be quick to distance himself from the openly racist CofCC, but apparently the CofCC is very keen on joining forces with DeAnna’s organization.  In the latest edition of the CofCC’s newsletter, DC-area chapter leader Sid Secular writes about his group’s recent activities. He concluded his update by stating, “In April, we plan on attending White cultural activities to spread our message, and to develop a relationship with the organization, ‘Youth for Western Civilization.’”

The fact that CofCC is reaching out to YWC to develop a relationship is not surprising given YWC’s history of ties to white nationalism. YWC has invited white nationalists such as Richard Spencer to speak to chapters in the past. Youth for Western Civilization members have also attended CofCC national conferences in the past.YWC’s members have had relations with far right political parties in Europe such as Belgium’s Vlaams Belang. YWC also is a strong ally of far-right politicians in the United States such as Tom Tancredo of Colorado. According to a new report published by the Anti-Defamation League, YWC joined forces with white nationalist Jared Taylor to start a fundraising campaign for the organization. Jared Taylor, the editor and founder of the white nationalist publication American Renaissance, has stated, “Blacks and whites are different. When blacks are left entirely to their own devices, Western civilization — any kind of civilization — disappears.”

YWC, like anti-immigrant groups such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform and the Center for Immigration Studies, are constantly having to defend themselves for their ties to white nationalist individuals and organizations. Unfortunately for YWC, this laundry list of far-right ties continues to get longer and longer. Even though Kevin DeAnna has denied his organization’s  association with the openly racist CofCC, it will be very interesting to see if and how the relationship between the two organizations develops over the coming months…
