FAIR launches “Hold Their Feet to the Fire” in the U.S. capital

Jill Garvey • Apr 06, 2011

This week, the Federation for American Immigration Reform is holding its “Hold Their Feet to the Fire” lobbying events in Washington D.C.  Today, FAIR is training its member to make lobbying visits to members of Congress. Or rather telling them how to “hold their feet  to the fire.”

Luckily, members of Congress got a special delivery this morning from D.C.  residents who want to help them stay cool.

FAIR likes to use heated rhetoric to promote its anti-immigrant agenda. But its troubling history points to an agenda that goes deeper than just immigration issues and taints its political activities.

In 1979 the group was founded by white nationalist John Tanton. 32 years later he remains on FAIR’s Board of Directors.

Tanton’s tentacles reach deep into white supremacist and anti-Semitic organizations. The founder of FAIR has financially supported platforms to debate pseudo-scientific research (racial eugenics) purporting to show that African Americans and Latinos are mentally inferior to whites because of their genetic makeup.

Tanton’s activism with regard to racial eugenics is based on the disturbing belief that those identified as the most productive “gene pool of the human stock” should be the ones with access to and control over scarce resources.

In a 1993 letter to Garret Hardin, a committed eugenicist who promoted pseudo-scientific ideas of racial purity, Tanton wrote,

I’ve come to the point of view that for European American Society and culture to persist requires a European American majority, and a clear one at that.”

In 1997, Tanton received 1.2 million from the Pioneer Fund to financially support FAIR. The Pioneer Fund was founded to promote the genes of white European Americans and funds groups that promote “race betterment” intelligence and genetics.

These are  just a few of the scary things we know about FAIR and John Tanton. Let’s hope members of Congress throw cold water on FAIR’s anti-immigrant rhetoric today.
