The Earth Times, an environment specific news agency, has taken a bold step and is attempting to remove all the content from its site that was added by anti-immigrant groups affiliated with John Tanton.
The Tanton Network is an array of anti-immigrant organizations founded or funded by white nationalist John Tanton. Well known as an advocate of racial eugenics, Tanton was nicknamed The Puppeteer for orchestrating the most powerful anti-immigrant movement in the United States. In his own words:
“I’ve come to the point of view that for European-American society and culture to persist requires a European-American majority, and a clear one at that.” – Dec. 10, 1993, letter to the late Garrett Hardin, a controversial ecology professor.
“Do we leave it to individuals to decide that they are the intelligent ones who should have more kids? And more troublesome, what about the less intelligent, who logically should have less? Who is going to break the bad news [to less intelligent individuals], and how will it be implemented?” – Sept. 18, 1996, letter to now-deceased California multimillionaire and eugenicist Robert K. Graham.
Earthtimes.org is an environmental website based in the UK, yet it maintains an impressive international scope: The Earth Time boasts the fact that over 3/4 of its readers come from the United States and Canada. A few weeks ago The Earth Times website introduced a bold new look, with a new plan of focusing only on environmental issues. Gone are the various non-environmentally related topics, and gone are the publications of the Tanton Network.
For months now the Center for New Community has been in touch with The Earth Times, making them aware of the white nationalist ties of the Tanton Network. The Earth Times management assured us that they had no contact with any of the organizations in the network, and that the the articles were introduced to their website by a third party, PR Newswire.
Nevertheless, The Earth Times worked to create a filter that would block all Tanton Network publications from appearing on their website, and decided to do a weekly search to remove all articles that may have slipped through. And although an effective filter is still in the works, over ninety percent of all Tanton Network articles have been deleted from The Earth Times website to date.
Congratulationsto The Earth Times on their new website. And congratulations for taking a stand against bigotry.
