White Power Music Groups Lure High Schoolers

Stephen Piggott • Jan 01, 2010

Last week, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) released a report highlighting the exploits of neo-Nazis who are attempting to lure high school and college students into the white power music scene. According to the ADL one such scheme involves a website offering free music downloads in an ad published in school newspapers. Before the ads were published the website had free downloads of independent artists, but after the ads ran in the school newspapers the website changed to a strictly white power music site.

ADL Director Abraham Foxman described the increase in deceptive tactics by white nationalists and neo -Nazis by stating, “While the hatemongers have used stealth tactics before, now they are taking it to the next level by attempting to trick unsuspecting students into logging on to sites that appear harmless, but in reality are promoting music with a white supremacist message,”

White power music is a very difficult problem to tackle in America, especially with the technology that white power groups and record labels use today. That being said, there are ways that people can fight back. One such way is by visiting Turn It Down. Turn It Down is the Center for New Community’s campaign to counter white power music. The website has information for parents, teachers, and youth about the dangers of white power music and how to identify it. The website has a free resource kit available for download and distribution. Turn It Down has also produced a map that offers readers a visual of just how broad the white power music presence is in America.

Record labels have also stepped up in the fight against white power music. One label, Insurgence Records, has teamed up with the Center for New Community to create Project Boneyard, a highly successful album designed to deter white power music. Recently, Project Boneyard released a second volume. Insurgence Records has the latest Project Boneyard album available on their site for only $3 and it is even cheaper if you buy in bulk. I recently got a copy of Volume II and it is a fantastic compilation.

The good news is white nationalists and neo-Nazis are being forced to step up their efforts to get their white power message to Americans. Campaigns like Turn It Down and Project Boneyard are having an impact, and hopefully fewer young Americans are being lured into hate groups.
