Voice of Art, a new documentary series capturing the spirit and passion of artist-activists committed to social justice in their community can now be seen on Pharrell Williams’ i am OTHER YouTube channel. A three part episode features Favianna Rodriguez, CultureStrike and Presente.org co-founder, in “Migration is Beautiful.” The episode largely “focuses on artists-activists using online and offline art and activism to bring about definitive changes to immigration policy and perceptions of immigrants.”
As an artist, educator, organizer, and visionary, Rodriguez “launched a historic cultural campaign turning the monarch butterfly into an iconic symbol of the immigrant rights movement and of the beauty and dignity of migrants and their journeys.” The episode follows Rodriguez from the immigration battlefield in Tucson to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, where she and undocumented activists from No Papers No Fear bus ride “risked arrest, beatings, and other abuse from authorities.”
“Migration is Beautiful” also includes actress-activist, Rosario Dawson, Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, Jose Antonio Vargas, and UndocuQueer artivist, Julio Salgado. Vargas and Salgado were featured in the TIME magazine, “We Are Americans” issue.
