Yesterday, the Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments in the Obama Administration v. Arizona case regarding the state’s anti-immigrant bill SB 1070. Both pro and anti SB 1070 demonstrations took place simultaneously outside the Court with the SB 1070 protesters outnumbering the law’s supporters by a margin of over 10-1. The meager pro-SB1070 crowd was made up of mostly white men and women over the age of 50 whereas the much larger crowd of individuals speaking out against the law was both multiracial and spanned all ages.
Following the hearing, Russell Pearce, the man who introduced SB 1070, Kris Kobach the nativist lawyer who drafted the bill and anti-immigrant Iowa Congressman Steve King, addressed the small crowd who were by that time outnumbered by journalists clamoring for comments. The three men spoke for little more than 5 minutes combined before making a hasty exit.
