Sara Blackwell may have ended her short-lived campaign for the Florida House of Representatives, but she has a new venture: a not-for-profit corporation.
In a blog post Sunday evening, the Florida attorney announced that Protect US Workers—also the name of the website she launched last year—is now a registered non-profit in Florida. In the post, Blackwell also noted that the group’s website will be redesigned and hinted at upcoming events that would “get international attention to our cause.”
Records from the Florida Secretary of State’s office reveal Blackwell filed papers of incorporation last month.
Blackwell’s new venture has us wondering if this is just the latest attempt by anti-immigrant organizations and activists to appeal to “the American worker” by scapegoating immigrants.
Nativist activists and legislators have increasingly used transparent claims of advocating for American workers as justification for their anti-immigrant positions and extremist rhetoric, yet they regularly fail to show up for workers rights in other capacities.
Last month, Blackwell organized an event in North Chicago, Illinois, featuring anti-immigrant demagogue Michelle Malkin.
Blackwell has also spoken at campaign rallies for anti-immigrant politicians and worked alongside leading anti-immigrant groups like the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and NumbersUSA. In an April 29 Facebook post, Blackwell said of both groups, “I have great relationships with them. They are amazing orgs.”
Blackwell has gained the most mainstream press for serving as the lawyer for Walt Disney World workers who say they were laid off and replaced by workers from abroad on temporary, specialty occupation H-1B visas. Nativist groups Floridians for Immigration Enforcement (FLIMEN) and Floridians for a Sustainable Population (FSP) have actively used this issue to promote their anti-immigrant goals.
If Blackwell wants her new organization to have any credibility, she should distance herself from the anti-immigrant movement and their extremist goals and rhetoric.
