Anti-Muslim strategist Gaffney joins scaremongering on administrative relief

In a short blog Thursday, anti-Muslim strategist Frank Gaffney claimed that President Obama’s administrative relief on immigration would “turn millions of illegal aliens into competitors for American jobs” and create “claimants on our already maxed-out social welfare system.”

Gaffney’s claims, though problematic, are unsurprising. Imagine 2050 has highlighted the ever-increasing trend of members of the organized Islamophobia movement echoing broader nativist talking points espoused by the established anti-immigrant movement.

Prior to the midterm elections, the anti-immigrant movement released a slew of ads with similar scaremongering on “American jobs.” Groups such as NumbersUSA, Californians for Population Stabilization, and Progressives for Immigration Reform (one of the anti-immigrant movement’s primary front groups), all released ads with this same message: Obama wants to “double immigration and bring in millions more immigrant workers to take jobs when many of us still can’t find jobs.”

In this short piece, Gaffney was also able to work in talking points from within his own wheelhouse, heightening fears about border security. As usual, his claims are weak considering that more people have been deported under Obama than under any other president, and the president has repeatedly pledged to continue beefing up border security, even though doing so continues to put the civil liberties of many at risk.

Considering that Gaffney keeps close company with leaders within the anti-immigrant movement, his willingness to join his cause with theirs to obstruct meaningful administrative relief is no surprise.
