ACT! for America turns Islamophobic Benghazi panel into funding pitch

The anti-Muslim group ACT! for America is now trying to turn a profit off of their president’s mocking of a Muslim audience member at Monday’s Heritage Foundation Benghazi symposium. In a mass email sent to supporters yesterday, the group says it needs a public relations firm.

The “Islamist lobby” is already getting its collective voice out “through their own powerful PR firms,” ACT! president Brigitte Gabriel claims. “Why can’t we? Are they more committed to their cause than we love our country? Absolutely not.”

In the email, Gabriel defends her harsh response to audience member Saba Ahmed in what Salon called an “Islamophobic freak show.” She says she responded to Ahmed “respectfully” (video footage below suggests otherwise) and that she has since been “attacked by the liberal media.” Gabriel says it’s time for supporters to “throw political correctness in the garbage where it belongs.”

To further appeal to her base, Gabriel says that while Muslim civil right groups “raise money in gold coins,” ACT! raises “money in pennies and have to depend on the generosity of people like you – patriotic Americans who love this country.”

Below is video of the exchange recorded from Heritage’s livestream of the event, courtesy of Media Matters. Gabriel’s comments begin at 4:15.
