Across the Nation, Anti-Immigrant Coalition Candidates Win Most Races

Aaron Patrick Flanagan • Nov 07, 2012

An Early SLLI Press Conference: Daryl Metclafe (center) w/ Mike Hethmon of IRLI (far left), Dan Stein of FAIR (near left), & the Disgraced Russell Pearce (far right)

With this year’s election results now mostly tallied, it’s time to take stock: how did the federal and state level politicians that represent the interests of the established anti-immigrant movement fare? For clarity’s sake, we define such representatives as politicians who maintain a voluntary membership in one of two coalitions, the House Immigration Reform Caucus (HIRC) or State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI).

Federal legislators who are members of HIRC essentially do the political bidding of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and its legal arm, the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI). Together, FAIR and IRLI author legislation and strains of messaging which HIRC members carry to and echo on Capitol Hill. SLLI serves the same function, but brings under its umbrella officials elected at state level.

Both coalitions, HIRC and SLLI, have been embroiled in controversy since their inceptions, with both counting some of the most extreme anti-immigrant representatives in the country amongst their respective ranks. Founded by Tom Tancredo in 1999, presently listed members of HIRC include Representatives Todd Akin, Michelle Bachmann, Brian Bilbray, Steve King, Lamar Smith, Lou Barletta, Louie Gohmert, Tim Huelskamp, and dozens of others. SLLI, founded in 2007, as well, has been stocked with extremists like Representatives Daryl Metcalfe, Russell Pearce, Brian Nieves, Tim Beardon, Tim Donnelly, Becky Currie, and others.

Below are the winners and losers listed by state and grouped coalition.
